These images were taken in two separate locations, both times completely unplanned on my way to photograph another location. Each time I was drawn to the big sky and kind of desolate land and had to stop and shoot a few frames. Each time the images I made turned out much stronger than the ones I eventually made when I got to where I was going.
I took two things from this:
1. Maximise your chances of creating the images you want to create by staying observant of your surroundings and always looking for opportunities. The world is one big photo opportunity. You just have to see it. I posted a few thoughts on the importance of observation as a photographer recently, which have some relevance here.
2. Australia has a huge, wonderfully diverse landscape which offers a little of everything for photographers. Wide farm fields, dry deserts to lush green rain forests and urban jungles. The thing that drew me with both of these locations is the sense of space and distance and isolation and this is what I hope the above images project.
I’ll definitely be doing more exploring of out of the way places, but in the meantime I hope you enjoy these images.
